The therapeutic setting

Therapy is typically offered at the therapist’s organization or their home offices. However, therapy may be also be available in a number of different environments such as your home, in outside spaces, in your work office, or even in more unusually noisier environments. In the digital age, therapy can also be available through a number of mediums as well as classical face to face. This include web cam, email, instant messaging, and internet phone systems.

Sometimes people prefer the convenience of home, phone or online access to therapy, or it may be because it is not easy to visit the therapist’s office due to lack of transport, disability or an accessibility need. Another consideration is safety, people who have suffered a trauma such as a crime could be reluctant to meet someone face to face in private and may be more comfortable working online or in an open public space. In other cases people may have difficulties that prevent them from meeting face to face which is why they are accessing therapy in the first place, such as fear of leaving home, having a phobia of open spaces, or a general social anxiety of meeting someone new. For some therapy can be anxiety provoking so having another mediums for accessing therapy can provide a transitory or longer term way of accessing therapy.

Whatever method(s) you choose or negotiate with the therapist it’s important that you feel comfortable doing so and feel safe from being overheard, so for example having no one in the house when you are online with your therapist. For online systems the tools used by the therapist must use secure encryption to protect against interception, which is analogous of minimising the possibility of someone listening in to a room. The other type of threat to online security is through anyone who can potentially access your computer. If someone is able to access your computer, there is a possibility they could access your files, emails and recordings on your computer or worse still install software called “keylogging” which could recording all your messages and sessions in stealth for viewing later on. Whatever method you choose, if safety is a worry talk to the therapist about risks and what protections are in place.
